Sri Lanka isn’t the first country that comes to mind when we talk about adventurous activities, but that doesn’t mean that you cannot have fun or indulge in adrenaline-rushing activities in the country. There is something for everyone, from hiking to fun activities like surfing and river rafting.
Sri Lanka is also one of the cheapest travel destinations in the world, and because of this, you can try out all the adventurous activities without burning a hole in your pocket. While you might not be able to experience all of them on your first solo trip, you can always select the ones that you find the most interesting, and be sure to try them out!
Here are some of the most enthralling adventurous activities you can try out on your solo trip to Sri Lanka. Let’s go!
1. Feast your eyes on dolphins in Kalpitiya
Kalpitiya Beach is famous for dolphin spotting. Not only can you have fun watching these dolphins, but also have a great time and enjoy yourself at the beach. If that doesn’t sound adventurous enough, you can take a boat ride and watch these dolphins up close. Not only is that adventurous, but also beautiful, and that’s sufficient reason to visit the beach! There are many boat services available that function for most of the daytime, so you can always hop on one and enjoy the dolphin show!
If you don’t like dolphins or want something more, don’t worry, Kalpitiya has a lot more to offer. Kite surfing – a major sport in Kalpitiya, is a must-try. It might be a little challenging if you have never tried it earlier, but you should definitely give it a shot. And don’t worry, the trained experts can help you with the sport here. Further, there are many adventure parks and wildlife areas that you can explore in addition to watching dolphins and kite surfing.
2. Experience the mighty rivers in Kitulgala
Kitulgala is one of the many hidden treasures in Sri Lanka that you must visit on your solo trip. Not only for some adventurous activities but also for the waterfalls, wildlife, and some hiking and trekking trails. Devon and Aberdeen waterfalls are world-famous and some of the highest waterfalls in the country. Also, the views from here are simply stunning, which makes it worth visiting. Don’t forget to click some pictures for Instagram here!
While all of that is great, what about the adventurous activities? Well, Kitulgala is known for river rafting. There is nothing more exciting than going with the flow of a mighty river! You will love this as it will get your heart racing, but for adrenaline junkies, it’s an absolute treat. River rafting is an activity that includes a group of people, so you can also make some friends and later on go bird watching and hiking with them.
3. Climb up the Pidurangala Rock
Pidurangala Rock is overshadowed by Sigiriya, which is one of the most famous attractions in Sri Lanka. Then why should someone climb the former instead of the more famous one? Because the hiking experience is much better on Pidurangala. On your way to the top, you will encounter many sites worth exploring and spending some time at. You can also take a break here if you feel like it. Once you reach the top, which is your primary objective, the views are mind-blowing. Not only can you see the sunrise but also Sigiriya from here! So you won’t have to climb Sigiriya now, lol!
Do note that the hike is quite strenuous, so wear your most comfortable shoes and pack the necessary items required for the hike. It will take you around an hour to reach the top without taking any break. If you wish to see the sunrise, you should start early and not take long breaks. Otherwise, you can take a few quick intervals and explore other places on your way to reach the top. Do not take a pass on this, as you would regret not exploring one of the most beautiful sites in the country!
4. Take it easy in Kalutara
Kalutara is a great place to enjoy some adventurous sports and activities for a majority of tourists. This is because it offers activities that aren’t too hard and something that even beginners can have fun doing. Canoeing and kayaking are the most famous sports in the city and do not require much practice. While both of these are pretty similar, the seating position and the paddle motions make them different.
If you wish to enjoy these activities in quiet settings, you should visit the Samanalawewa reservoir. If you are an intermediate or an expert, consider visiting the Kalu Ganga river. And If you sit somewhere in the middle of these, Kalutara Beach is perfect. And water sports aren’t all that Kalutara has to offer. You can also take a guided cycle tour and discover the hidden treasures in the Western part of the country. While this might not be as adventurous as some other options, you can find places that you wouldn’t be able to otherwise.
5. Catch some waves at Midigama
Dolphin spotting, kitesurfing, canoeing, and kayaking are all great. But what if you are a surfer or want to enjoy surfing? In that case, you should head to Midigama, which is located in the western part of the country. But why should you visit only Midigama for surfing? Well, not every beach is ideal for surfing, and Midigama doesn’t fall in that category. It is one of the best beaches in the country for surfers. So if you love surfing, forget about everything else, pick up your surfboard, and head to Midigama Beach.
Even though it is considered a year-round destination, the crowd isn’t at its peak in May and June, which might be an excellent time for you to visit. If you have never picked up a surfboard in your life ever before, it’s better that you do not start your surfing journey on this beach as the waves can get relatively high. But watching others is a treat to the eyes too. And who knows, you might have your heart in your mouth. It’s exhilarating!
6. Take a safari in Yala National Park
Yala National Park needs no introduction. It is the most famous and the second largest national park in the country. Spread over almost a thousand square kilometres, it is home to a wide variety of animals. Due to this, it is best to take a safari, explore the wildlife up close and learn about endangered species of animals. Be it elephants, leopards, turtles, or hundreds of species of birds – you can see it all here! All that said, the park is primarily known for its leopards as it has the highest leopard density in the world. These big cats are what attract millions of tourists to the national park every year.
You can spot many animals here in their natural habitat enjoying their lives, unlike in a zoo. The sight is truly breathtaking! But remember, neither is touching animals advised nor is it allowed, so refrain from doing so. You can visit the park at any time of the year, but visiting in the offseason will ensure that these animals are a bit relaxed as there wouldn’t be many people around them.
7. Be awestruck by the marine creatures in Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the country and is visited by many every year. Many things make it unique: the parties, picturesque views, souvenir shops, tasty food, sporting activities, and the people! And when it comes to adventure sports, you have all of them too. However, the most popular is scuba diving. But how much experience do you need for it? None! You get to dive deep into the ocean and look at some fascinating marine creatures that you would have seen only in pictures. I have no diving experience, but when I tried it out, I loved it.
If you think that is all Hikkaduwa has to offer, you are wrong! However, if you are too scared to scuba dive, you can enjoy the one-of-a-kind glass-bottom boat ride. Yes, you read that right. There are boats with glass or transparent bottoms that allow you to explore the sea without getting into the water! How convenient is that? And the water is clear and not polluted, which makes this experience a lot more magical.
8. Explore the village of Meemure
Meemure is an isolated village near the Knuckles Mountain Range. What’s so adventurous about this place? Well, the isolation! Travelling to metropolitan cities like Kandy and Colombo is easy. But visiting a village with only about four hundred people and not many technological advancements is not an easy task. Be it exploring the beautiful village or hiking along the trail – you can do many things here. When your phone has no cellular network, you’ll learn the real meaning of ‘adventurous’ activities!
Other than that, you can also enjoy the beauty of the place. It has pleasant weather all year round. Little things like talking to the locals, learning about the area’s culture, and spending some time without your phone complete your solo trip. Remember that the locals will not communicate in English, so I recommend you learn some words and phrases, just in case.
9. Catch a seaplane at Kelaniya
Kelaniya is a suburb of Colombo that is primarily known for its Buddhist temples and rich history. Manelwatta Temple is the most famous must-visit among the various temples present here. But the best part about Kelaniya is the seaplane tour, commonly known as a “flying boat.” These planes take off from lagoons, reservoirs, lakes, and other water bodies and take you around the city for a tour. It was one of my favourite activities in Sri Lanka, hands down!
Sri Lanka has some unique picturesque locations to offer its tourists who are into aesthetics. And looking at these landscapes from the sky is even more exciting! Be it the hills or the modern life of cities – the views are just breathtaking! I had a wonderful time as I opted for Cinnamon Air’s services, and I highly recommend that you check them out. They are one of the best in the country and also offer rides at incredibly affordable rates.
10. Fly high in a hot air balloon
All adrenalin junkies will want to fly high above the clouds at least once in their lives. If you are one of them, you can strike off this thing from your bucket list in Sri Lanka. Flying in a hot air balloon will let you truly appreciate the lush jungles, wildlife, and striking coastlines. Also, some operators provide a view of the famous temples and city life, so that you can look at them from an unusual viewpoint. Usually, these flights are about an hour long and enough to explore many more places than you think.
If you are not sure about choosing between a seaplane and a hot air balloon, I would recommend that you try both! Many private companies offer these services. They also provide pick-up and drop services, so you do not have to travel to these places independently. What’s more convenient than this?
What are your favourite adventure activities in Sri Lanka?
Those were some of my favourite adventure activities that you must try out on your first solo trip to Sri Lanka. Remember that adventures need not be extreme sports. It is about challenging yourself and getting outside of your comfort zone, all while enjoying yourself. If you think scuba diving and surfing are too much for you, try a safari or a hike instead. There are so many options to choose from in Sri Lanka! Where else do you find so many choices in one place? Make the most of this opportunity and have a great time in Sri Lanka!
