They are affordable, convenient and always on time. Moreover, train rides from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko station are full of scenic beauty.

1. Train – The Most Scenic and Convenient Way to Reach Kawaguchiko Station from Tokyo

There are quite a few trains operating between Tokyo and Kawaguchiko station. I had trouble choosing the right one on my first solo trip to Japan. So plan well in advance and choose the train that best suits your itinerary.

Via Fuji Excursion

If you are planning a day trip to Kawaguchiko from Tokyo, Fuji Excursion is your best bet. With no in-between transfer, Fuji Excursion runs at regular intervals in a day between Tokyo and Kawaguchiko station. It makes it to and fro from Tokyo easy.

As the train remains in demand, it is highly advisable to secure your seat! You can book advance tickets before a month. A one-way ticket without JR Pass will cost you around ¥4130 ($26.53).

Via JR and Fujikyuko Limited Express Trains

Your next convenient option to reach Kawaguchiko station from Tokyo is via JR Limited Express. Initially, board the express like Kaiji and Azusa from Shinjuku Station. It will take you about one hour to reach Otsuki station and transfer to a train on the Fujikyuko Line. 

If your budget permits, instead of boarding a local train from Fujikyuko Line, you can also avail of the Limited Express trains like Fujisan View Express,

Via JR Chuo Line and Fujikyuko Line

If you are in no rush, the cheapest way to reach Kawaguchiko station from Tokyo is via the regular or local trains. It takes more time than Limited Express and Fuji Excursion. But it is much more flexible if you are an explorer on the go.

You can also hop on and off any stations by the Chuo Line to do other activities or stop over as well. Overall, it takes around 3 hours to reach Kawaguchiko station from Tokyo.

  • JR Pass or IC Card does not cover the cost of travel from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko station. An additional fee is charged.
  • Check the transportation schedule to avoid delays during transfer from the JR Line to the Fujikyuko Line.
  • Always book tickets in advance to avoid last-minute goof-ups.

2. Direct High-Speed Bus to Reach Kawaguchiko from Tokyo

Another affordable way to reach Kawaguchiko from Tokyo is via a bus journey. In Tokyo, there are multiple points from where the high-speed buses leave for the Fuji Five Lakes area. 

Shibuya Station, Shinjuku Station, and Tokyo Station are three major points from which to hop on a bus to Kawaguchiko. On average, a bus takes around the same time as a train , about 2 – 3 hours.

You can book your tickets either online or directly from the bus terminal. It will cost you about ¥2000 ($12.83).

3. Drive a Rental to Reach Kawaguchiko from Tokyo

If road trips are your thing, rent a car from Tokyo to go for a solo drive to Kawaguchiko. Also, driving to Kawaguchiko on your own is a liberating experience. 

Along with the flexibility of time, this is also the fastest way to reach Kawaguchiko. It takes around one and a half hours to cover an approximate distance of 110 kms.
