One hour from central Tokyo, the Ghibli Museum is located in Mitaka – a western city of the capital. It is all about three things – art, film, and fantasy. From concept drawing to imagery – watch what goes behind creating the world of Totoro, Kiki and other beloved characters.

Although the Ghibli Museum isn’t very big, I feel every corner is painted with the imaginative spirit of Miyazaki. After all – good things come in small packages, right? 

Here, you can expect to spend around 3 hours easily. And if you have an extra hour, explore the Inokashira Park to soak it all in. 

How to Book Ghibli Museum Tickets

You cannot believe how competitive it is to get the Ghibli Museum tickets. The tickets go on sale every 10th of the month at 10 am (Japan time) and sell like hotcakes. It can sell out as fast as 30 minutes on sale. A Ghibli Museum ticket will cost you around ¥1000. Here’s how you can book your spot:

  • The cheapest way to book Ghibli Museum tickets is through Lawson’s website. That said, the user experience is alright for solo travellers, especially on a budget in Japan but not for bigger groupsthe site takes a long time!
  • There are travel agencies that offer Ghibli Museum tours, which can be a good option if you want to be part of a group. Ask your stay in Tokyo for help in advance! They have quite some tricks up their sleeves.

Highlights of the Ghibli Museum

  • Short Films: One of the main highlights of the Ghibli Museum is the short film of the month. Even if the film is in Japanese, you’ll understand with ease – thanks to their storytelling technique and visual representation.
  • Studio Room of Miyazaki: Peek into Miyazaki’s room of inspirationfrom the walls covered in animation and drawing to desks submerged in art supplies, this room in the museum is a fascinating one!
  • Exhibitions: From permanent to rotational – Ghibli Museums hosts creative exhibitions that are a treat to watch!

Ghibli Park – Live and Breathe the Ghibli Settings

Unlike the traditional theme parks with rides shows and multiple food outlets like Disneyland, Ghibli Park opened in 2022 and treats you with one-on-one models and sets as seen in the Ghibli films.   

Basically, you can walk into your favourite animation film set to explore all the props in the house. From Howl’s Moving Castle to Whisper of the Heart – Ghibli Park recreates the iconic immersive atmosphere of Ghibli sets.

However, there are only two food outlets – so stock up on some on-the-go bites as there’s a lot of walking involved in the park. And, if you want to be on time – Google the map and plan your route according to your priority beforehand. 

How to Book Ghibli Park Tickets

Just like the Ghibli Museum, the tickets for Ghibli Park also go on sale on the 10th of every month. So, advance booking is highly recommended. Generally, it will cost you ¥4500 to cover all the spots in the park. Here’s how you can book your Ghibli Park spot:

  • If you are flying into Japan, you can book your Ghibli Park tickets beforehand from the international ticket site of the park. 
  • Or else, in Japan, you can purchase tickets directly via Lawson’s Boo-Woo ticket service.
  • You can go for package tours with travel agencies which include Ghibli Park along with other activities in the Aichi Prefecture of Nagoya City.  

Tip: If you can afford to buy the VIP ticketget it, it gives access to all 5 areas and is absolutely worth the extra Yen. You can book the VIP ticket for Ghibli Park on the same site and it goes on sale two months in advance.

  • The Warehouse: If you want to understand the makings of Ghibli films, the Warehouse is a must-see. It is full of inspiration.
  • Dondoko Forest: Walk through the Satsuki and Mei’s house of My Neighbour Totoro.
  • Mononoke Village: Make Gohei-Mochi at Mononoke Village of Princess Mononoke.
  • Valley of Witches:  Watch how the magic of Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Service comes to real life from reel life.
