Formidable landscapes, royal architecture, holy lakes, and desert scrub, that’s how I remember the “Land of Kings” Rajasthan. India’s largest state is home to a rich culture, magnificent forts, palaces, colourful festivals, folk dances, and delicious food that elucidate its regal and prosperous history. That said, there are numerous things to do in Rajasthan that you can put on your list for an unforgettable experience.

I relived India’s glorious history as I walked the lanes of the majestic palaces in Jaipur and Udaipur during my recent trip to Rajasthan. Firstly, the old-world ambiance around the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort and spectacular Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur took me on a nostalgic trip. I also experienced tranquillity and spirituality at the Dargah Sharif in Ajmer. The best thing about the Dargah is that it is a centuries-old pilgrim centre visited by people of all religions from various parts of the world. So it is one of the non-touristy things that you CANNOT miss!

Blessed with a sprawling range of heritage sites, culture, exquisite crafts, wildlife expeditions, and deserts, Rajasthan provides you with royal legacy experiences of India that you would like to live again and again. As the state boasts of unparalleled royalty, exceptional landscapes, and booming culture, here are some of the things you can do in Rajasthan during your solo trip. 1. Walk through the colourful streets of Jodhpur

Discover Jodhpur’s beautiful history by taking a walk through its stunning blue streets. Popularly known as Navchokiya, this blue area is as peaceful and quiet as it can be. Trust me, the blue city is going to charm you with its grandeur of bygone eras. It felt serene as I walked around the picturesque blue-hued homes of Jodhpur, and I am sure you will do too!

2. Fly a kite in Pushkar

Several cities in Rajasthan celebrate the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti with a Kite Festival. Children and youths throng to their terraces, balconies, and open grounds to fly colourful kites in all shapes and sizes, attempting to reach the soaring sky. I got the opportunity of a lifetime as I flew my first kite from the terrace of my tour guide. Added with colourful Indian festivals, Kite flying has also emerged as a much-awaited event for family and friends as they celebrate it with lots of love, laughter, and food. So get yourself a kite from a local shop and take lessons from the local kids.

3. Unmissable sunset at Udaipur’s Lake Pichola

You will enjoy one of the most scenic sunsets in Rajasthan at Lake Pichola in Udaipur. As the golden sunsets over the lake, its gleaming water brightens the Taj Lake Palace and buildings around the area. It is truly a sight for sore eyes. I couldn’t stop smiling as the sun drowned in the water in front of me. Honestly, it all felt like a dream. You can also take a sunset boat cruise or boat ride on the lake water closer to the setting sun.

4. Rendezvous through Rajasthan’s wilderness with Jeep Safari

Home to some of the best wildlife and bird sanctuaries in India, Jeep Safari is one of the most popular things to do in Rajasthan. Several cities provide you with an opportunity to greet the wild inhabitants in their natural environment. Among the many sanctuaries and animal reserves in the state, Ranthambore National Park is the most popular destination for spotting a tiger in its natural habitat. So make sure to feel closer to Mother Nature by taking a jeep safari into the wild. You won’t be disappointed!

5. Get spooked by Bhangarh Fort’s ghosts

This experience is not for the faint-hearted. The 17th-century old Bhangarh Fort is both impressive and spine-chilling at the same time. While days at this fort are warm, bright, and beautiful, nights are forbidden for visitors due to some supernatural stories attached to its past. Even though Bhangarh has been termed as the Most haunted fort in India, its splendid ruins are worth visiting. Put on your walking shoes to explore the fort’s ruins and listen to locals’ spooky stories around the district. Yes, you can do it!

One of the most exclusive things to do in Rajasthan, camelback riding through the rustic villages of Bikaner, is an experience of a lifetime. During these rides on a camel’s back, you can witness the exquisite views and unmatched beauty of Rajasthan’s deserts. You can enjoy a camel safari around the ruins and monumental sand structures in Jaisalmer and Pushkar. There is also a special Camel Breeding Farm located near Bikaner that offers you an interesting opportunity to savour some delicious ice cream made from camel’s milk. In short, it is a must-visit place if you are a country girl like me!

7. Feel blessed at Ajmer Sharif

The holy resting place of Khwaja Moin-Ud-Din Chisti, Ajmer Sharif is a must-visit place in Rajasthan. Thousands of devotees worldwide visit this beautiful dargah and the sacred shrine to get their wishes fulfilled. From listening to soulful Qawwalis to divulging in the sweetness of kheer (rice and milk pudding), Ajmer Sharif offers a wholesome experience to all.

8. Dune bashing in the Thar Desert

There’s no better thrill than cruising through the sand dunes along with the wind in the great Thar Desert. Adventure seekers must pump up their adrenaline by dune bashing in high-speed SUVs in the sands of the desert. Honestly, it was as good as the Desert Safari in Dubai! So make sure to take an unforgettable ride in your jeep as you destroy the ever-shifting dunes through the rugged desert.

9. Hot air ballooning in Jaipur

Witness the enchanting beauty of Rajasthan’s Pink City from thousands of miles above the ground in a hot air balloon. It is a different experience to observe the scenic marvels, gigantic forts, and quaint palaces of Jaipur from the city’s beautiful skies. 12. Adore the spectacular architecture of Chand Baori

With imperial architecture and colossal beauty, Chand Baori or Abhaneri Stepwell is a historic marvel located in Dausa District near Jaipur. It is said that this mesmerizing stepwell is even older than the Taj Mahal. Also, the stepwell’s maze-like architecture is made with about 3500 steps and is breathtaking as it boasts of excellent craftsmanship in the bygone era.

13. Explore Nahargarh Fort

Safeguarding the Kingdom of Amer, the trio of Nahargarh fort, Jaigarh Fort, and Amber fort gives you a magnificent view of Jaipur. What makes the journey worth it is the breathtaking sunset from the top walls of Nahargarh Fort. And later in the evening, treat your tastebuds to some delicious authentic food at the rooftop restaurant near the fort.

14. Royal Vintage Car Museum

Car enthusiasts can admire some of the finest automobiles from the early years at the Udaipur Palace Vintage Car Museum. The rustic-designed museum houses an exquisite collection for those who live and breathe all things automobiles related from the classiest to the rarest vintage cars. I could not help but explore the beauty of these well-maintained cars in the museum. What’s even more exciting is that these vintage cars roar through the streets of Rajasthan during the Vintage Car Rally that takes place every year around January and February.

15. Rural vibes at Chokhi Dhani in Jaipur

Luxury seekers gather at Chokhi Dhani in Jaipur as it provided the best of culture and hospitality in one place. I enjoyed the best of both worlds at this place, and fell head over heels for it. As they served some of the best dishes of the Rajasthani cuisine, my stomach and heart filled with both food and love! In short, food was the best part of my solo trip to Rajasthan hands down! So enjoy a colourful, fun-filled cultural show with that mouthwatering food for a wholesome experience!

16. Shop till you drop

From Sadar Bazaar in Jodhpur to the Johri Bazaar in Jaipur, Rajasthan is a shopper’s paradise. Shopping around the local markets in Rajasthan is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in the state. You will find anything and everything in these culture-filled markets and at reasonable prices. You can buy exquisite gold and silver jewellry as souvenirs at Johri Bazaar. Likewise, if you want to grab some traditional Kagzi Pottery, take a trip to the streets of Alwar. You can thank me later, my friend!

17. Multi-hued Melas of Rajasthan

Celebrate festivals and joyous occasions with locals by attending one of the colorful fairs almost all year round across various parts of the state. One of the most famous is the Pushkar Camel Fair, and it takes place around October-November. And it is a 5-day fair filled with exhilarating activities. Decorated animals, colourful turbans, traditional dance and music, and cheerful activities make these fairs a must-visit in Rajasthan.

18. Catch a Live Puppet Show

It is one of the unmissable experiences in Rajasthan. While visiting the Thar Heritage Museum in Jaisalmer, make sure to watch a Puppet Show in the evening. It is entertaining and truly depicts Rajasthan’s glorious cultural heritage that has been well-preserved for several years. I sat there for hours listening to stories about Rajasthan’s tradition from the locals. It was also one of the best non-touristy activities from my trip!

19. Watch a Movie at Raj Mandir Cinema

Watching a movie at Jaipur’s Raj Mandir has been one of my personal favourite experiences in Rajasthan. You will be awe-struck by the well-maintained, grand meringue-style architecture of the building. Since it is difficult to get a movie ticket at the last minute, I must recommend you to book your tickets in advance for this unmissable affair.

20. Desert camping in Jaisalmer

Explore the magic of endless sand dunes by staying a night in desert camps in Rajasthan. If you wish to experience a unique nomadic life, it is the right thing for you to do. During winters, enjoy warm evenings around the bonfire at the camps with Rajasthani folk music and delicacies. Also, the golden city of Jaisalmer offers some of the best desert camping experiences in Rajasthan. So what are you waiting for? Book one now.

21. Bird watching paradise

Rajasthan provides a surreal experience by offering various bird sanctuaries and national parks with a wide variety of birds for avid bird watchers. From Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary to Keoladeo National Park, you can spot endless species of birds and animals to satisfy the wilderness explorer in you.

22. Learn about war history at Haldighati

Almost an hour away from Udaipur, Haldighati is where Maharana Pratap fought a battle with the Mughals in Medieval times. The magical dark yellow soil tells an unforgettable tale of one of the bloodiest battles in Indian history. Know about King of Mewar’s history by taking a stroll through the region in the Aravali mountain range. Haldighati is also known for its massive rose farming, where light pink roses bloom in the turmeric-hued soil. So don’t miss the Haldighati Memorial established in the middle of a luscious garden.

23. Visit the Indo-Pak Border at Jaisalmer

Witness the Indian armed forces’ soldiers protecting the border of the country adjacent to Pakistan at Longewala and Tanot regions of Jaisalmer city. Visiting the border between India and Pakistan is indeed a proud experience for every India. Honestly, I was filled with pride after seeing the gallantry and bravery of Indian soldiers. However, you might need to check for prior permits or permission from the Indian forces before visiting the border.

24. A religious rendezvous

Rajasthan has some of the most magnificent temples in the country. Among the many sacred temples is the Galtaji Temple. It is located in the Khania Balaji town, about 10 km from Jaipur. It is also popularly known as the Monkey Temple as big groups of monkeys reside inside and near the temple. So make sure to keep your personal belongings and food safe from these notorious monkeys. Furthermore, you can take a walk through the ancient but royal ruins of the Dalhapur Temple in the Jhalawar district. I’m sure its grandeur architecture supported by carved pillars and torans would intrigue you.

25. Get lost in the charm of forts and palaces

From the Golden Jaisalmer Fort to the iconic Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, Rajasthan boasts of massive forts and palaces. You can experience and learn about India’s royal heritage from these aesthetic architectures. So be prepared to fall in love with exquisite designs, mammoth structure, and landscaping locations. You can also enjoy a walk at the royal marvel of Jaigarh Fort, where you can witness the Jaivan Cannon, the largest in the world. Just so you know, Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is one of the most visited places in Rajasthan. Furthermore, Jal Mahal at Man Sagar lake will leave you spellbound with its breathtaking glory.

• One of the highlights of Rajasthan’s visit is the traditional food that will fill your tastebuds with numerous flavours. Rajasthan is one of India’s gastronomic centres, offering a wide variety of authentic and mouthwatering dishes. Since Rajasthan is the most vegetarian state in India, it is easy on stomach!
