Wondering what the things to do in Goa’s capital are? Well, the capital city has a world of things to do. So if you’re thinking of skipping the heart of Goa on your vacation, drop that thought. Panjim, or Panaji, as you call it, has it all. You can visit the Portuguese-influenced Fontainhas or Dona Paula, take a tour of Old Goa or an island, and so many more!

No matter what you do or where you are, one thing is guaranteed—you’ll never be bored in Panjim. I can say this with surety because of my own experience in the city. Take a quick look below to find out what you can do in Panjim.

1. Roam around the lanes of the Latin Quarter

The influence of the Portuguese in the Latin Quarter of Panjim is evident to date. Back in the day, the Fontainhas was a residential area of Portuguese. Now it is a UNESCO heritage site.

Walk down the pages of history as you stroll in the narrow lanes of the quarter. You will come across colourful houses of the bygone era. There are many local shops where you can stop by to collect souvenirs as well. And if you’re hungry by the end of your exploration, grab a quick bite at the cafés here.

Location: At the foot of Altinho Hill

Time required here: 2 hours

2. Take a day tour to Divar Island

Indeed, this is one of the best things to do in Panjim. A tour of Divar Island will take you to raw parts of Goa. The greenery of the place soothes every tired soul. So if you want to relax in Panjim, head towards Divar Island. The island even boasts Portuguese style through structures of houses. Thus, the place is a perfect mixture of nature and history. You can reach the island easily by a ferry ride or by availing buses.

Location: Lies in the Mandovi River

Time required here: You can spend an entire day here!

3. Visit the Dona Paula village

When in Panjim, visiting Dona Paula is a must. The village gained popularity among travellers after a few appearances in Bollywood movies. You can visit the viewpoint to catch one of the best sunsets in Goa. Not only that, you can even spend time on the beach and engage in adventure activities.

Location: 7 kilometres from Panjim

Time required here: Somewhere between 4 hours to a day.

4. Explore the Basilica of Bom Jesus

This is one of the popular churches of Goa in Panjim. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is flooded with devotees from around the world. Inside the church, you will witness a silver casket. It contains the remains of St. Xavier. If you’re religious, this is one of the top things to do in Goa.

Location: Old Goa Road, Bainguinim

Time required here: 1 hour

5. Walk through the ruins of Reis Magos Fort

Right across the river from the capital city lies the Reis Magos Fort. Being one of the oldest forts in Goa, it attracts people’s attention from far. The fort’s architecture showcases the amalgamation of Portuguese and Hindu culture in the best way possible. Do not forget to take some stunning shots here. If you have time, visit the Reis Magos Church beside the fort.

Location: Bardez, Goa

Time required here: 1 to 2 hours

6. Indulge in adventure activities at Coco beach

Are you looking for some adventure in Panjim? Don’t you worry, the city has got you covered! Head towards Coco Beach of Panjim. It is one of the best beaches near Panjim that offers travellers various adventure activities. Once you’re here, you won’t fall short of things to do. You can surf your way through the vacation or enjoy a tan session at the beach.

Location: Nerul, Goa

Time require here: One can easily spend 4 to 5 hours here.

7. Go on a shopping spree at Panjim’s

The phrase “shop till you drop” perfectly explains shopping at Panjim. The capital city doesn’t disappoint anyone when it comes to shopping. It is by far my favourite thing to do in Panjim. All the shops are stuffed with items worth a purchase. Spices are a must-grab from the shops of Panjim. Whatever you buy, do not forget to use your superpower, ladies, i.e., bargaining.

Location: Municipal Market, Goa

Time required to explore: As long as you can go on!

8. Enjoy the nightlife at Joseph Bar

Panjim’s nightlife is not much talked about. But it is as happening as the nightlife of other parts of Goa. And Joseph Bar is one fine example of it. You can chug beer, feni, or kombucha here, along with a few quick bites. The funky décor of the place lends it the Goan party vibe.

Location: Gomes Pereira Road, Altinho, Panaji

Time required here: 4 to 5 hours

How many days will you require to explore Panjim?

If you’re not in a rush, take at least 3 to 4 days to explore the city. Make the most of your vacation by exploring all parts of Panjim. However, if you do not have time to cover the entire city, simply pick your favourite places and explore them.
