What are the Famous Lakes of Udaipur?

Udaipur, nicknamed the ‘City of Lakes,’ offers its visitors quite a lot of gorgeous lakes. Some of the famous ones are Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, Udai Sagar Lake, Swaroop Sagar Lake, Purohito ka Talab, Jaisamand Lake, and Rajsamand Lake, among others.

These famous lakes of Udaipur not only are a delight to the eyes but also give its visitors a glimpse into the regal history of the Rajputana culture. Quite a lot of these beautiful Udaipur lakes were established or constructed during the 17th and 18th centuries, and if you are a history enthusiast, then you are in for a treat!

Most of these lakes now offer tourists boating facilities—you can experience their charm in a much more fun way on your solo trip to Udaipur.

Fateh Sagar Lake

Fateh Sagar Lake is arguably one of the most popular lakes in Udaipur among tourists and locals. It was built back in the 17th century by Maharana Jai Singh. A few years later, the lake was remodelled by Maharana Fateh Singh.

This unique pear-shaped lake is stretched about 2.5 kilometres and consists of three islands. The first island features a beautiful park with gorgeous water-jet mountains, the second island has a park and zoo called Nehru Park, and the third island consists of a solar observatory – Udaipur Solar Observatory.

If you are looking for something adventurous, then Fateh Sagar Lake has got you covered. You can check out the adventurous boat rides for a unique solo trip experience to Udaipur!

Lake Pichola

Your solo trip to Udaipur will be incomplete if you don’t include Lake Pichola in your itinerary. It is a beautiful picturesque lake surrounded by four different islands – Jag Mandir, Jag Niwas, Arsi Vilas, and Mohan Mandir. This lake, built in the 14th century, attracts several tourists to its folds every year.

If you have watched a good number of Bollywood movies based out of Rajasthan, you would have seen this stunning lake in some shots!

The lake is encircled by numerous temples, shrines, restaurants, resorts, and Havelis, giving perfect picturesque views for your next Instagram post! Additionally, Lake Pichola offers readily available boat rides at all times too.

Purohito ka Talab

Purohito ka Talab is among the most beautiful lakes in Udaipur. It is not all that famous, making it a hidden gem in the town. It is surrounded by a serene environment and is often quiet, making it the ideal place for you to visit if you want to spend some time admiring the beauty that Udaipur is!

The lake is situated away from the hustle-bustle of the city and has some stunning peaks on one side, the views of which can be viewed from the lake.

The most interesting part about the Purohito ka Talab is that it features a tall wall covered with traditional Indian graffiti. At the wall, you can spot the city’s modern culture with Rajasthani men dressed in their traditional attire, some elephants and horses! You can even click some aesthetic pictures here.

Udai Sagar Lake

Built back in the 16th century, Udai Sagar Lake is among the most history-rich lakes in Udaipur. It stretches a length of 4 kilometres and is surrounded by lush green trees. The people of Udaipur believe that this lake has witnessed numerous battles and wars along its banks, which is among the many reasons that make it the perfect place to check out if you are interested more in the culture and history of this city!

I recommend that you definitely check out Udai Sagar Lake when you visit Udaipur in the monsoon season. During this time of the year, the trees look fresh and greener, and the lake looks breathtakingly beautiful!

Swaroop Sagar Lake

Swaroop Sagar Lake is a charming little lake tucked between two of the famous lakes in Udaipur – Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake. It was built in the 19th century by Maharana Swaroop Singh during his reign.

Currently, this beautiful lake not only attracts a vast majority of tourists but also caters to the water congestion needs of the town. The lake has a functional dam – Swaroop Dam, that does the job of helping the city, along with serving as an ideal spot to relax and take in the gorgeous views!

Rajsamand Lake

Another beautiful lake in Udaipur that is serene and calm, Rajsamand Lake, was built in 1660. This historic lake is popular for its gorgeous views of the sunset. If you happen to visit the lake in the afternoon or evening, you can enjoy peaceful walks along its banks while soaking in the views!

The southern end of Rajsamand Lake has nine beautifully designed marble ghats, or platforms, that go deep into the waterbody. These ghats are dotted with stunning twelve marble pillars that give you a glimpse into the history of Rajasthan!
