Goa – the sunshine state of India, has become a paradise for every traveller. And why wouldn’t it be? The state has everything that a traveller longs for. You get to relax on the beaches, take dips at the ocean, hog on to delicious Goan cuisine, and whatnot.

So by now, you may wonder what can even go wrong in such a perfect destination. Well, to your surprise, many mishaps can happen on your solo travel to Goa, especially if it is your first time in the state. And being a solo female traveller, it is always better to know the dos and don’ts of a place beforehand to travel trouble-free. So if you want a smooth experience in Goa, take a look at the following do’s and don’ts in Goa.

Do’s in Goa

1. Do check out your accommodation thoroughly before booking.

Your accommodation in Goa will be a game changer. Whether in North Goa or South Goa, it is very important to check the details before booking your stay. I recommend every traveller visiting Goa book their hotels from an authentic website. And also you should never pay in advance without proper knowledge of the place.

Tip: Choose a stay that has access to the water body. This way, you can live and breathe through the Goan vibe.

2. Want to explore Goa on your own? Rent a vehicle!

On your solo venture to Goa, this must be on your to-do list. If you know to ride a scooter or drive a car, there is no better way to explore Goa than on a rented vehicle. It has become the go-to choice for travellers in Goa in terms of transportation.

I also find it cost-effective with a sense of freedom and convenience. What more do you want? So the next time you’re in Goa, don’t forget to rent a vehicle. Simply brush up your bargain skills, and you can crack a great deal.

3. Get a massage to relax and bid adieu to the stress on the beaches of Goa.

I am one hundred percent sure no matter how much you spend, you won’t get the feel of getting a massage from a local woman on the beach. Often on the beach, you’ll be greeted by women dressed in their local attire offering massages. I feel the only thing you should do is say YES to it. Believe me or not, they have a magician’s hands. And once you experience it, you will opt for it every time you’re in Goa.

4. Stay in beach shacks for a night.

Another must-do in Goa is to experience the shack life, especially on South Goa’s Agonda Beach. If you’re worried about safety, stick only to popular shacks in Goa. These popular ones have their reputation on the line, so your safety is also their concern. However, before booking a shack, be transparent and speak to them about your needs to avoid problems later.

5. Taste the scrumptious food of the state.

When in Goa, it is impossible to escape the taste of Goan cuisine. Goa’s food is another reason I absolutely love this place. You will know why when you taste their food! There are numerous cafes and restaurants which will take you on a culinary journey of Goa. Hog on to pork vindaloo, fish curries, cafreals, and other seafood dishes.

6. Take a tour of old Goa to understand the culture of Goa.

On all of my solo trips, this is the part I always look forward to. I love learning about the different cultures of a place. If you also love exploring different cultures, you should take a tour of old Goa. You can start from the state’s capital as it has some of the best architectural gems with significant historical backgrounds

7. Speak to the locals.

Another favourite thing on my list of dos is speaking to the locals. If you want an insight into a place, this is the best way to do it. However, do not get over-friendly and get into an argument for all the wrong reasons!

Don’ts in Goa

1. Don’t get involved in drugs.

Goa is known for hosting some of the best trance parties. Although, nowadays, trance parties have lost their hype. But it is always better not to get involved in drugs. It is strictly prohibited, so don’t do anything illegal under the influence of anybody. Always be aware of your surrounding.

2. Do not drink and smoke in public places.

You’re allowed to drink and smoke in Goa, but just not in public places. It is also one of the absolute don’ts of Goa! Even when buying alcohol, please buy it from a licensed shop. You probably wouldn’t want the trouble of getting into legal matters. Also, know your limits with alcohol, and ensure you have arranged a ride back to your hotel beforehand.

3. Dress according to the place.

I am sorry to bust the myth, but Goa is not all about wearing a two-piece bikini. So the question remains what to wear when in Goa. I feel if you’re confident enough, you can wear anything. All you have to keep in mind is where you’re heading to!

4. Don’t drive your vehicle on the beach.

Goa and excitement go hand-in-hand. However, keep a check on your excitement when driving your vehicle. You should not drive on the beaches of Goa under any circumstance.

5. Do not accept a free drink.

You know the drill of being a solo female traveller. You will have to be extremely cautious. Your safety is in your hands. Even if you’re offered a free drink, it is always wise not to accept it.

6. Don’t plan EVERYTHING!

I feel Goa is where you should not plan everything beforehand. You should allow yourself to follow the flow and watch your vacation unfold.
