is Sri Lanka safe for solo women travellers

Why an Island Destination is a Great Choice for Solo Women Travellers

A common question I have faced over the years of my solo travel is, “Which type of destination do you prefer the most while solo travelling?”. Being a female solo traveller who has dreamt of travelling to as many destinations as possible, it is difficult to answer a question that expects me to select my most preferred one. But there is an image that comes to my head at such questions – sprawling beaches, clear blue water of the mysterious ocean, and exotic flora and fauna! Yes, an island destination is what makes me want to stay there forever!

While historical places, mountainous regions, or ever-modern and luxurious travel destinations are beautiful in their own way, there is something intriguing and calming about an island destination.

But is an island destination a great choice for solo female travellers? Let’s find out!

Island destinations let you feel like a free bird

One of the best reasons to visit an island destination is that you feel light, and your mood instantly lights up. If you are someone who loves peace and quiet, then the ocean will definitely be your best friend in this!

Walking on the sand of the beach while the cool breeze gushes through your hair, the music of the ocean waves, and the soft chirping of the birds are quite magical. Experiencing all these things in one place can only happen at an island destination. And also, who wouldn’t want to trade these calming sounds in place of the constant honking and loud noises of the city, right?

Island destinations help de-stress your body and mind

The sound of the waves is calming to our soul, and the vastness of the beach helps de-stress our bodies. Research says that the sight of the ocean acts as a medicine to our soul and body. And having travelled to island destinations such as Bali and Sri Lanka, I agree with this piece of research!

Island destinations let you indulge in a wide variety of water sports

While de-stressing your body and mind is convincing enough to consider an island destination for your next solo trip, there is something else as well – water sports! Yes, being near the ocean and not indulging in water sports will leave your solo trip incomplete. And the crystal clear water of the ocean will definitely tempt your insides to take a jump in it!

For a beautiful island destination like Bali, which is budget-friendly as well, you can definitely add some adventurous water sports to your list of things to do on the island. Trust me, you will not regret any of it!

And for a luxurious travel destination like Dubai, the options for water sports will leave you spoilt for your choices.

Island destinations make for perfect sunset views

Who doesn’t love a good sunset view, right? Island destinations are some of the best places where you can witness a gorgeous sunset!

The sight of the colour of the sky changing and the sun going down is just so gorgeous! And sunsets happen to be one of the many things that instantly light up my mood too. Whenever I get a chance, be it the terrace of my house or a beautiful travel destination like Bali, I immediately stop whatever I am doing and just watch the sunset!

…and also capture the perfect moon-lit sky at night

I believe that the changing colours of the sky have an adverse effect on our mood. Another reason that makes island destinations perfect for solo travelling is the moon-lit sky at night that looks nothing short of magical. Even though the sky is not changing multiple colours at night, a dark blue/black colour with the bright moon and twinkling stars around it is a sight to behold too!

To make the best of this perfect view, you can take a walk at the beach under the moon-lit sky. Even though some people think that this is a romantic gesture, I would say you don’t really need another person’s presence to enjoy something as simple yet beautiful as a moon-lit sky!

Island destinations are the ultimate getaway

Most of us have dreamt of living on an island, away from all the worries and noise of the city. And island destinations make this dream come true, even if it is for a short period of time. A vacation at an island destination is like an ultimate getaway. Not only do we get to get away from city life, but we also enjoy nature, which in turn helps soothe and calm our bodies. This way, island destinations work as therapy but in the arms of nature and not inside someone’s office!

Okay, so these are some of the reasons that make an island destination perfect for female solo travellers. Now, let’s take a look at some of the best island destinations that you should definitely check out and consider for your next solo trip!

1. Bali

Bali is definitely one of my favourite travel destinations. Be it the stunning beaches to spend a relaxing evening at, trying out adventurous activities to get the adrenaline pumping, or simply exploring the local restaurants to devour the local cuisine – Bali is a complete package!

Another popular tourist attraction that Bali offers is the yoga and meditation retreats. Like I mentioned earlier, island destinations help calm and soothe your body and mind. Bali’s yoga retreats are famous worldwide, and these are no less than a magical experience in themselves. If you love to meditate with a beautiful view, then definitely check out these yoga retreats while you are in Bali.

If you are a female solo traveller who is on a tight budget but cannot wait to get away from city life, then Bali is the perfect island destination for you. Bali is budget-friendly, and there are plenty of things that you can try out to help reconnect with your soul and find inner peace!

2. Tahiti

Tahiti is a gorgeous island destination located in the South Pacific in the French Polynesian Islands. The island’s most popular tourist attractions are volcanoes for hiking and the black sand beaches! And how often do we get to witness gorgeous black sand beaches, right?

Along with getting a perfect getaway from your city life, you also get to do so much in Tahiti. You can explore the local cuisine (which is one of the best in the world) or even enjoy the traditional French Polynesian dance ceremonies. Either way, Tahiti will ensure that you have a great solo trip away from the hustle-bustle of the city.

3. Dubai

Although Dubai is not really an island destination, it is hard for me not to mention this beautiful country when it comes to talking about destinations that are the ultimate getaway for your soul.

After visiting Dubai, I can say that it is equally calming for your soul and body even though it is a country full of glamour. There is so much to explore in Dubai, the beautiful beaches for stunning sunset views, adrenaline-pumping adventurous activities for solo female travellers, and fun water parks

You can even check out Dubai’s famous tourist attraction, the Burj Khalifa. It is an art in itself, offering so many things for you to check out inside and outside the building as well! And did you know that Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world? Witnessing the landscape from its top floor is something that you should definitely experience!

If you are someone who is looking to spend some quality time on your next solo trip, then consider visiting Dubai, as it is a perfect blend of nature and city life! And trust me, you will not regret visiting this gorgeous country, which is easily on every traveller’s bucket list.

4. The Maldives

While the Maldives are some of the most beautiful islands in the world, I feel it’s the ocean that adds to its charm. Crystal clear aquamarine water around those beautiful white shores is a sight to behold. And beneath these waters, you can even see the beautiful corals!

Apart from witnessing the natural beauty and the gorgeous sunset views, there are actually a lot of things that you can do on the islands. One of the most famous tourist attractions of the Maldives is the water activities, mainly snorkelling and diving! When I had visited the Maldives a few years ago, I was simply mesmerised by the natural beauty of the islands. I also tried out snorkelling here, which turned out to be one of the most beautiful highlights of my solo trip to the Maldives!

The Maldives can be a great island destination for you if you need some time off of your busy schedule and rejuvenate your body and mind.

5. Sri Lanka

A South Asian island, Sri Lanka does not get the fame and hype it deserves! It is surely one of the best island destinations for a solo trip on a budget. The coastline of the country is full of stunning beaches that give gorgeous sunset views as well!

Apart from the beaches, Sri Lanka has a lot more to offer – amazing hiking trails, delicious Sri Lankan cuisine, and fun activities for female solo travellers.

If visiting South Asia has always been on your list of travel destinations to explore in the upcoming years, then definitely consider Sri Lanka. It is a perfect combination of fun and culture!

6. Lakshadweep Islands in India

By far one of my most favourite island destinations to visit for the perfect getaway from city life, Lakshadweep Islands are a must-visit for every female solo traveller.

Considering that these islands are not that famous among many travellers, let me tell you a little bit about them. In the Hindi language, the term ‘Lakshadweep’ means one lakh islands! Located in the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep islands have been kept detached from the Indian subcontinent. Many parts of these islands have been kept away from tourism in order to preserve their natural habitat. And, out of 36 Lakshadweep islands, only ten have been inhabited by people where, unfortunately, only five are accessible to tourists!

Now, the fun part. Lakshadweep islands are primarily known for their amazing water sports. Some of their famous water sports include glass-bottom boat ride tours, snorkelling, parasailing, deep-sea fishing, sailing, kayaking, and scuba diving.

If you are interested in checking out the marine life, you can even find the coral reef formation deep within the sea, which is a sight to behold, considering how beautiful these marine creatures are. And the water is crystal clear around the islands that you need not even go too deep into it to spot the multi-coloured coral reef formation!

If you have always wanted to visit India but never gave it much thought, then definitely make your first, or next, solo trip to Lakshadweep islands for the perfect getaway!

So, when are you planning your next solo trip to an island destination?

In my opinion, island destinations are definitely the best destination for a perfect solo trip for female travellers. Not only are these destinations beautiful, but they also help detoxify your mind, body, and soul, which is something that we all need from time to time!
