Can you Swim in the Lakes of Udaipur?

Udaipur is known for its lakes among tourists. Besides boat rides and walking along the banks, swimming in the city of lakes is a dream of many. Yes, you can turn this dream into reality. Although there are restrictions, you can definitely go swimming in the lakes of Udaipur. There are many ghats in Udaipur that gives you access to the pristine water of the lakes. If you are someone who loves swimming, then I think there’s no better way to experience the lakes of Udaipur than going for a swim in the lake.

The best way to be able to swim in the lakes is to get in touch with the locals. I have not experienced this, but I have witnessed many people taking a dip and swimming in the lake. You need to know the points from where you can go for a swim.

Lake Pichola

Lake Pichola, constructed in 1362, holds the city’s charm. When you are in Udaipur, this point of attraction is a no-miss for travellers. You can witness the scenes of Udaipur amidst the Aravalli range from this location.

There are endless activities at Lake Pichola for you. Swimming is one of them. Ghats like Ambrai Ghat, Gangaur Ghat, and Naav Ghat gives you access to Lake Pichola’s calming water. It is advisable to swim along with the locals in the morning time.

Locals flock to Ambrai Ghat for a refreshing swim at the lake. You can spot many swimming enthusiasts if you are at the ghat in the early morning.

Gangaur Ghat, right opposite Ambrai Ghat, also allows you to swim in Lake Pichola. You will notice many devotees visiting this ghat. Some even take a dip and offer prayers to the sun.

Naav Ghat is famous for its belief in taking dips to wash away your sins! So you can take a dip and swim a little before stepping out of the lake water.

Fateh Sagar Lake

One of the best places in Udaipur is Fateh Sagar Lake. This place has a soul that touches every traveller’s heart. The tranquil ambiance and the sparkling water are a temptation for everyone.

Find yourself a suitable spot before you go for a swim. Do ask the locals beforehand about the right time and place for swimming at Fateh Sagar Lake.

Badi Lake

If you are looking for a place with less crowd amidst nature, Badi Lake is the spot for you! This gem of a place is about 12 kilometres from the city of Udaipur. The scenery of the place will take your breath away. You can go for a hike around the lake to Bahubali hill. After the hike, a swim at Badi Lake is the perfect way to end your day. It is also the best way to relax and unwind.

Your guide will guide you to a perfect spot for you to swim. Soak in the calming water and enjoy the view. This place is definitely going to leave an everlasting memory for you to cherish forever!

Things to keep in mind before taking a dive

Swimming in the lakes of Udaipur sounds like it is the ultimate fun. But it can change your experience in a fraction of a second! You need to keep a few things in mind to NOT turn this experience into a nightmare.

  1. You are not violating any rules of the city being a tourist. Always be one hundred percent sure before diving into the water. Check whether you are allowed to go for a swim from that particular ghat. This is to make sure that you do not land up in trouble.
  2. Only go swimming if you are a good swimmer. I cannot emphasise how important this is! Please do not opt for it out of an adrenaline rush. An accident is the last thing you want to experience on your solo trip to Udaipur.
  3. I know you are on a solo trip, but preferably do not go for a solo swim! The lake waters are quite deep and are a foreign place for you. Whatever you do, keep in mind that your safety comes first
  4. Swim only in the demarcated area of the lake.
  5. Keep your belongings safe and secure before going for a swim in the lakes of Udaipur.
  6. Make sure to wear appropriate clothes before you get into the water. A piece of cloth that will not get into your way while swimming and also not disrespect the culture around you. So choose wisely!
